Important Information about the Martingale Loop and Rolling Hills Loop: Although both of these start within Rancho Palos Verdes, they go into the gated city of Rolling Hills (NOT Rolling Hills Estates which is a separate city). The trails are all easements on private property and are controlled by the Rolling Hills Community Association (RHCA). They have always required permits for non-residents to use the trails but this has not been seriously enforced until recently. Now, because of a number of incidents that have occurred, they are getting serious about enforcement. Anyone doing these hikes should be aware of this and should understand that they are liable to be confronted by residents (or even law enforcement) if they don't have a permit. (I am NOT a resident of Rolling Hills but I have been forced to limit my hiking in Rolling Hills because of this situation.)

I just want to make sure people know that when you look at the map at the preserve, the waterfall and the trail to it are not marked on the map. We hiked the whole circuit, and never made it to the falls, which is okay, because it was still really beautiful. Now we just need to go again! So, just to clarify, take the fire road that goes toward the mountains, not the one that parallels them to the left.

Did this hike yesterday, May 19, 2012. This year we had less than 1/2 average rainfall, so I was worried that at this relatively late point in the season the creek would be dry. Thankfully, there was still plenty of water and we had a great time sliding down the top falls and jumping off the middle falls (which were a little shallow; I scraped the river bottom).

A couple of important things to note. 1. The trail takes you to the top of the swimming hole formation, then you have to scramble down a significant pitch of loose dirt and do some bouldering. I saw plenty of boyscouts handling it, so no big deal, but there were some people who weren't up for the scramble and therefore couldn't actually reach the pools. 2. We are fairly fit, experienced hikers and the trail took us about 2 hours each way.

I find this easy hike to be delightful and have used it many times to introduce beginner hikers to a wilderness hike (altho not too wild). At the first water crossing look back and see the broken wall of an old building that visitors stayed in back in the 40's. It is now dystroyed. There was also a store for visitors and as you hike on look across the canyon to see the remains where a church and organ once sat. The history here is rich. Too many people now are not good for the wild and leave behind trash and even destroy trail. Go further and you enter Bear Canon, a trail not too kept up today. None the less, I love this historical trail with all it has to offer. Keep on Trekin!
