When looking for potential hiking places look at recommendations from other fellow hikers. Some of these people may know some amazing spots.
If you are a beginner hiker look for group holidays that you can join, these may be something you can join online, or there may be somewhere you can attend in person in your local area. There are many outdoor activity groups around, with many fellow enthusiasts looking for new adventures and people to do these with. Look to your local gym or sports center to see what they have to offer or if they know of places you can attend.
Discover a whole new world of hiking when going for the weekend, opening new possibilities of adventures that can be as adventurous or as tame as you want. Whether you are going for the day or week, you will still need to take some basic equipment with you. Some equipment is lifesaving, some essential, and some that are just for a comfortable excursion.
Beginning at the basics
When choosing your equipment, picking the correct equipment to take on your trip is essential to you having a good time or a disastrous time. With many things that can potentially go wrong in the outdoors, writing yourself a checklist can help with your trip. Although writing a list may seem like a mundane thing to do, it should be one of the first things you do when planning your trip.
Basic equipment may seem like something you won’t forget about like footwear, but other things should be included that you may not think are important, like solar power banks, these will ensure that your phone stays charged at all times. Phone chargers may just save someone’s life. In the outdoors things can change very quickly, if you become lost or disorientated, this may be your only way of reaching help.
Getting separated from who you are with can happen if one person stops for a rest and wants to catch the others up. In the mountains or on vast land things can look the same, although you may have a meeting point sometimes things get mistaken when they look alike. Keeping safe is the priority when on any outside activity.
There is a small list below of things you need to take when day hiking. When you make your purchases there will be recommendations and ratings about what equipment is good and what you should be looking at. From being a beginner to a professional there will be lots of places to buy what is needed. Knowing the best things on the market can be done easily and a step at a time, so rushing in to buy all that they have on offer will result in things you will not possibly need, or use.
- Solar power bank
- First aid kit
If going for the week here are some more items you should add to your list
- Bug spray
- Sleeping bag
- Spare clothes
- Rehydration salts
- Lighters? Matches
- Cooking equipment
When going on a trip for more than a day you need to pack wisely, essential items are the first things you should pack. The other things should come after. Remember if you do not have a base to camp in then you will be carrying these backpacks with you. This is why you need to make them as light as possible without forgetting the main things for your trip.
Where to hike
When picking your hiking spot, make sure that where you have chosen is legal to do so. Some places, although they may not look like it, can be private property. When venturing onto private land this can lead to trouble and possible arrest, this may seem extreme. If however, you use a person’s land to hunt or fish without the appropriate permission this will be classed as poaching.
Some of this land may be able to be accessed with the owner’s permission, they may rent out a campsite or have restricted areas that you can use, certain trails that are open to the public. Whatever the situation, make sure you are allowed to have access to this legally. This may lead to heavy fines or prosecution. Having the correct knives and riffles is also a must, carrying the wrong type of knife is illegal and dangerous. You may be required to have licenses for these.
Hiking will normally result in cooking around the fire at night time, so some form of hunting or fishing will be involved in this at some point. If doing so, gaining the correct licenses before your trip will be something that you need to look at before you leave. These may need to be applied for before you enter. If you do not look into what is permitted and what is not this may not only land you in trouble but it can ruin or even cut short your trip.
Even if your partner or your children are not a fan of hiking, there are many places you can go and there will be something to do for the entire family. Some places that you can go hiking may be ski resorts when the weather changes. If this is the situation then these places will often have spas on site, and activities for the children. Some places will even have a children’s club, this may be at a supplemented price but this may include things like lunch, zip wiring, or such activities. So while you are hiking your way along a trail the children are entertained at the same time.
Even if you do not spend all your time together as a family while you are away, this is still a good way to get the whole family bonding together. Maybe doing some fishing or collecting firewood will give your family precious time that they would not normally get or have available due to the busy lives you lead. Families do not have as much time as they used to spend good quality time together. Children often attend a weekend, or after school clubs, parents are busy working, or sometimes families live in different houses. So when the opportunity comes up, being able to make memories together is special.
Hiking can be done with family, or alone, so you do not have to have friends that are into this as a hobby. There will be clubs you can attend meeting people will come with this. There will also be clubs for those over the age of 50, this is especially helpful if you are widowed, separated or your family has grown and left the family house. This may have left you lonely, or depressed however you feel about being on your own at this moment, joining a club with other similar minded individuals can give you a new lease of life.
No matter where you want to hike, many things will be the same, no matter what part of the world you are in. Knowing where you are and recognizing your surroundings is a key part of your trip, with lots of mountains looking the same in the dark. It’s advisable that you take a phone as well as having a meeting point.
Ensuring you have the correct equipment is not just helpful but it can be a matter of life and death. The clothing at footwear you purchase is not for a fashion show, it honestly isn’t a must that you look super hot on your hike. Keeping your temperature and you safe from the elements is a must!
Hiking can and will lead you to some of the most stunningly beautiful places in the world. Looking into places to visit near you may be something to look at as a beginner. The more experienced you become, the more you will want to go and discover new countries, and surroundings in different cultures. Places you would never think possible often have the most beautiful and stunning scenery to explore.
